As for Joe, maybe he simply wasn’t thinking about what he was doing, or maybe he ignored the implications. I agree that once the misstep was made it shouldn’t have been repeated, but I have a feeling at least most of Tally Hall didn’t realize by the time the Banana Man video came out the negative implications of their costumes. And I understand where you’re coming from now. Yeah, it’s been enjoyable to debate with you because I feel like I’m learning some things lol. I've assure you I've donated to bail funds and actually gone to BLM protests, but I think learning to recognize stereotypes in media you like is also important, lest you accidentally repeat them and sound racist yourself.Įdit: haha I just noticed I keep talking to you too! We must have just gotten on at the same time and I enjoy a little debate if I think my fellow-converser seems willing to both speak and listen. It would take two seconds to realize "oh! this is inspired by old darky iconography, yeah that was a misstep on their part" and move on. I'm just so confused as to why people are defending this. Look: I don't think Joe is a ""racist"" in the way of the stupid trumpians who will be cruel or violent to actual real life black people.

There's just so many parallels to minstrel makeup and presentation that I'm not sure how this could have happened by accident.

The first ever movie with sound had a man singing in blackface. Sure, I think it IS actually meant to look a bit like a bird but there's a long, long offensive artistic history of people putting on face makeup and doing black accents in music, theater, and film. Watched the video again before I made any of these comments, actually, because I wanted to be as fairhanded as possible. (Seriously tho, please donate to BLM if you haven’t yet).Įdit: by the way I realized that I’ve responded to a lot of your comments specifically on this sub, and that wasn’t on purpose I’m just scrolling through the posts since I haven’t checked it for a while If you want to fight racism, donate to BLM, don’t make an analysis on reddit about a bird costume from a music video by a band who no longer exists.

The song and video are over a decade old at this point. You’re policing artistic expression and seemingly misinterpreting it intentionally to rile people up. It’s the “fans” who say stuff like this who will ensure that the band is never gonna get back together. I think Joe is a transphobe, but the racism accusations are just stupid.

Banana Man is it’s own character at this point, and a loved one. Seems like fan service to me, like when they give Han Solo his iconic outfit in The Force Awakens. And like the commenter said, it’s an iconic look. And the female vocals would be sung by the clouds, but that’s harder to make your face look like a cloud than a bird. I’m sure if there were an animated music video there would be a bird singing those lyrics. It’s supposed to look like a tropical bird, and this fits the song. Also it fits pretty well in Black Rainbows. So unless you’re trying to stick up for the birds who may be VERY offended by this display of “bird face”, you are misguided. Animals are used frequently in social commentary. The only one who retains it afterward is Joe, because the “Banana Man” is like a hybrid bird/human, like the pigs at the end of animal farm. They literally sit in a bird cage and act like birds. If this isn’t obvious I get the feeling you haven’t listened to the song or watched the video. Everyone in Tally Hall did it (except Ross, because these were the Steve days), not just Joe, and it was supposed to be a bird. Also are you seriously including curly black hair? What was he supposed to do, dye his hair? That’s just what he looks like.

Would be kinda weird if he didn’t have a banana. The older someone is, the more likely they'll have seen examples of it and will be able to recognize it for what it is.īruh he holds a banana because the song is banana man and it’s about a capitalist banana salesman selling bananas. People don't use darky iconography much nowadays, which means that younger people often don't recognize the stereotype when they see it because they haven't had prior examples. How old are you? I hope this isn't super invasive, but in this case I think "he's from a different time, he just doesn't understand what's inappropriate" is happening in the opposite direction. What WOULD it take to convince you that this is, on some level, intentionally about race? Only doing it again for native Hawaiian lyrics. The birds being introduced as the ZIMBABWE songbirds. He's holding a banana (another huge darky stereotype is to compare nonwhite people to monkeys). All the elements of Wikipedia's description of darky iconography: bug eyes, darkened skin, outlined lips, curly black hair (though sure, that ONE thing is natural to Joe). I am absolutely boggled by your inability to interpret context clues.
